Pet Adoption Center

The Pet Adoption Center in Northwest Mall is yet another 'famous first' for Houston's animals.
Late in 2006, Saving Animals, working in conjunction with the City of Houston's Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care (BARC), and Harris County Animal Control, launched what has become the 'first' permanent off-site dog and cat Adoption Center in Houston dedicated to finding permanent homes for animals from the public shelters. Located in Northwest Mall at Highway 290 at 18th Street, the Adoption Center is a smashing success. Bright and cheerful, the visual concept was created by specialty marketer Design & Inspiration whose clients include Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Tootsies. Angela Dewree, principal at Design & Inspiration even called in fashion icon Todd Oldham to add the finishing touches to the Adoption Center. Dogs and cats who would otherwise not leave the public shelters in Houston are now showcased in a welcoming and enjoyable environment and are flying out the doors of the center to loving families and happy homes.
The Adoption Center is a model created by Saving Animals where government, corporations, foundations and a non-profit organization joined forces for the common goal of increasing adoptions and decreasing the destruction of dogs and cats in shelters. The lead gift to sponsor the creation of the Pet Adoption Center was provided by Petco Foundation. The government partners are the City of Houston and Harris County, the Glimcher Corporation donated retail space in the mall for the center. Saving Animals volunteers and staff operate the Pet Adoption Center.
"Our mission is to make Houston the 'first' major American city where every adoptable pet is valued, cared for, and has a forever home," states Sean Hawkins, President and Founder of Saving Animals.
